Medieval Mending Stitch Masterclass with Jennifer Collier

As part of her Arts Council Grant to develop her creative practice Jennifer has learnt new stitches and techniques, and has been discovering how to translate the art of lost stitches onto paper. These techniques are an important part of our creative heritage and she wants to continue to invest time in them to keep them in the present, offering them onto future generations.

Therefore we are hosting real life subsidised masterclasses at Unit Twelve so she can pass on these techniques to others. In this Medieval Mending Stitch Masterclass Jennifer will teach the Buttonhole and Cretan stitches used by Monks on Medieval manuscripts to fill voids in parchments to seamlessly 'mend' them on both sides. We will be stitching on vintage postcards, and you will progress to using both of these stitches together to fill larger holes.

In the afternoon you will be shown 'Joining Plait Stitch' which was historically used for 'Scarf-Joinery' to mend medieval manuscripts. Scribes cut away flawed parchment in the margins and pulled the two edges together with stitched decorative seams using brightly coloured threads. This you will be taught using an edged fabric so you can master the stitch before even attempting it on paper.

We are offering 2 free spaces for individuals who have financial challenges, caring responsibilities, or any other barrier in accessing art workshops. We will not ask for proof of earnings or personal circumstances, but would ask you to simply provide a brief reason so we can ensure a comfortable environment for you in the workshop. All materials and equipment, included vintage postcards and edged fabric are provided, but you may wish to bring a basic sewing kits with your favourite crochet or perle threads. And if you wear them do bring your reading glasses!

Full payment will be taken at time of booking (this is non refundable or transferable to a different workshop). However IF this workshop has to be cancelled you will of course receive a refund in full.

All materials and use of equipment are included, however it is recommended that you bring a few items to personalise the work (as listed above)

Please bring a packed lunch. However cold drinks, tea & coffee will be provided.

Under 16’s must be accompanied by a participating, paying adult.
